Backlighting Membrane Switch Subassemblies
Backlighting solutions are crucial for enhancing the visibility and usability of membrane switch display windows and other user interface components, especially in low-light environments.
The common backlighting technologies for membrane switches include LED backlighting, El lamp backlighting, fiber backlighting and LGF backlighting.
For fiber backlighting, its backlighting effect is soft and even, but its cost is too high. The pure LED backlighting is hard to get the even backlighting effect, so it usually used as the indicators.
El lamp only can achieve single color backlighting, and its life is short, and it also need match a driver, which is not convenient, and the cost is also not cheap.
So the LGF backlighting technology becomes the mainstream now. LuphiTouch® has rich experiences to design and manufacturing all kinds of backlighting membrane switches, especially the LGF backlighting membrane switch.
Here is an overview of various backlighting solutions and their respective benefits:
Backlighting Solutions for Membrane Switch Display Windows
1.LED Backlighting:
● Overview: Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are a popular choice for backlighting due to their brightness, efficiency, and long lifespan.
● Advantages:
■ High brightness and contrast.
■ Energy-efficient and long-lasting.
■ Available in various colors and can be used for multi-color backlighting.
■ Flexible design options (e.g., side-lit, edge-lit, or direct backlighting).
● Applications: Suitable for most membrane switch applications, including industrial controls, medical devices, and consumer electronics.
2.Electroluminescent (EL) Backlighting:
● Overview: EL backlighting uses phosphorescent material that emits light when an electric current is applied.
● Advantages:
■ Uniform, soft, and even light distribution.
■ Thin and flexible, making it ideal for compact designs.
■ Low power consumption.
● Applications: Ideal for applications where uniform light distribution and thin form factor are critical, such as keypads, remote controls, and portable devices.
3.Fiber Optic Backlighting:
● Overview: Fiber optic backlighting uses light-conducting fibers to transmit light from a remote light source to the display area.
● Advantages:
■ Provides even illumination across large areas.
■ Can be used in harsh environments as the light source can be placed away from the display area.
■ Low heat emission at the display site.
● Applications: Suitable for applications requiring robust and durable backlighting solutions, such as outdoor equipment, industrial machines, and military devices.
4.Light Guide Film (LGF):
● Overview: LGF uses a thin film with printed light guides that direct light from LEDs to the desired areas.
● Advantages:
■ Ultra-thin design, suitable for slim profiles.
■ Can create custom light patterns and shapes.
■ Available in various colors and can be used for multi-color backlighting.
■ Efficient light distribution with minimal power consumption.
● Applications: Best for devices where space is limited, such as handheld electronics, automotive displays, and wearable technology.
5.Printed Electroluminescent (Printed EL):
● Overview: Similar to traditional EL backlighting, but uses printed technology to create light-emitting panels.
● Advantages:
■ Customizable designs for specific light patterns.
■ Even and consistent illumination.
■ Flexible and thin.
● Applications: Great for custom interfaces, decorative lighting, and applications needing precise light control.
